Bureau is thrilled to present a solo project by New York painter Julia Rommel for Art Basel Statements. Rommel presents an installation of new abstract paintings and for the first time a suite of works on paper. These works reveal the artist's focused, labored methods which result in gorgeous, complex geometries framing deep, monochromatic surfaces. Rommel relies on stretcher bars and framing supports to direct her compositions. Performing multiple, variously sized stretchings of linen combined with numerous layers of gesso and oil she creates densely layered paintings which bear the traces of their making. Both the drawings and paintings disclose the artist's multi-layered practice which is paired with a keen attention to the subtlety of color, and the specificity of proportion. The resultant works are exquisite, approaching the sublime, and yet still reveal a trace of the resistance and durational process of their production.

Rommel has always given rich titles to her works, contributing a sense of time and narrative to the paintings while reflecting the artist's mental landscape during the physical and meditative processes in the studio. Longer-form writing has also been a central component to her practice; with each solo exhibition Rommel has composed a text related to the works or her own position as an artist. Part-expository, sometimes confessional, she writes with tone of self-reflective assertion, and an almost brazen sense of humor. To complement the project for Art Basel Statements, Bureau is publishing the artist's first monograph, Around Woman, which includes writings by the artist as well as the new eponymous text, along with images of paintings, drawings and deep details of her painterly surfaces and intersected edges.

Every time I need a mark, I have to build the tool for making that mark: mostly stretcher bars to create a relief, sometimes a pillow of paper towels or just the painting folded back and stapled to itself. I rarely find that my own brushy gesture belongs on a painting. A mark made using the stretcher bars has a natural sense of belonging- at one time the whole painting was contained within its edges. So in layers it flatly and bluntly reveals time and a history of decisions. -Julia Rommel, 2014

Julia Rommel was born in 1980 in Salisbury MD and lives and works in New York. She received her MFA from American University in Washington D.C. She has had two solo exhibitions at Bureau: Delaware, 2012 and The Little Matchstick, 2014, as well Girl With Silver Rings, Sorry We're Closed, Brussels and Mother Superior, 2013 at Gaudel de Stampa, Paris. Upcoming solo exhibitions include her first museum show at The Aldrich Museum in Connecticut this coming November.
